Benefits of cardboard waste recycling

Almost every business, big or small, will need cardboard recycling collections at some point. You may have waste packaging from incoming shipments of goods you’ve bought. Or, perhaps you have some damaged boxes that can no longer be used to ship out orders to your own customers. Regardless of where this cardboard waste originates, recycling is your best option.

Environmentally friendly commercial cardboard recycling

In July 2025, DEFRA’s publication on the UK’s waste statistics revealed that between 74.3% and 86.4% of the nation’s paper and cardboard packaging is either recycled or recovered. While these numbers seem quite positive, as a resource that is 100% recyclable, the UK is falling short of its card recycling potential. That’s where Shred Station can help.

Cardboard can be recycled several times before the fibres degrade. By recycling cardboard rather than letting it go to waste in landfill sites, your business can reduce its reliance on new resources, enhance the sustainability of your waste management processes, and reduce your Scope 3 waste emissions. Our commitment to recycling 100% of cardboard, along with our CarbonNeutral® certification and Zero to Landfill policy, will help your business achieve its ESG goals and support a circular economy.

Recycling for all types of cardboard

Our commercial cardboard collection services are suitable for all types of card and cardboard waste.

Card and cardboard boxes

We can recycle archive boxes, storage boxes, delivery boxes, and much more. We can recycle any strength of cardboard box, from paperboard to triple-wall cardboard.

Product and food packaging

We’ll recycle all sorts of card-based products and food packaging. Whether it’s toy boxes, ring boxes, cereal boxes, egg boxes, or Tetra Pak cartons, we’ll find a solution.

Corrugated cardboard

We offer corrugated cardboard recycling for single-face, single-wall, double-wall, triple-wall, and fluted cardboard. Whether in sheet form, roll form, or as boxes, we can recycle it.

Cardboard tubes

From paper towel cores to shipping tubes for artworks and posters, cardboard tubes come in all shapes, sizes, and thicknesses. We can recycle it all.

Cardboard packing material

Many companies now use card as a sustainable packing option for cushioning fragile items. This is easily recyclable, from transit packaging to hive wrap, packing roll, and paper bubble wrap.

Mounting and backing board

If you specialise in framing, you’ll likely have a regular need to dispose of mounting board and backing board. Whether it was cut to the wrong size or otherwise damaged, we’ll ensure it’s recycled.

Flexible service options

Through our experience managing cardboard recycling for businesses, we understand that every business is different. From varying collection schedules to the type of cardboard bins or containers required, we will create a tailored plan to suit your organisation’s needs. Our services are available on a one-off or ad hoc basis as and when you need us, or we can collect your cardboard on a regular schedule as frequently as you like.

If you’re in charge of cardboard waste management at your organisation, we’ll work with you to ensure your cardboard waste disposal runs smoothly. We help with cardboard recycling management in pretty much every sector, including warehousing, manufacturing, distribution, logistics, retail, e-commerce, hospitality, and office buildings. We can also provide waste reports to our regular customers detailing volumes of waste collected and recycled by location.

How is cardboard recycled?

Cardboard is recycled in a very similar way to paper. We will collect your cardboard, bale it, and sort it ready for transportation to a card mill. After arriving at the mill, clean cardboard is shredded and then pulped in a big vat of water and chemicals. Any contaminants, such as staples or tape, are removed from the pulp, creating a pure slurry-like mixture which can be sprayed onto large mesh sheets. These mesh sheets are then heated, drying out the mixture into solid card, ready for recycling into new cardboard products.

Recycled cardboard can be transformed into a wide range of new materials, including new cardboard, paperboard (e.g., cereal boxes), paper products, and even used in products like plasterboard.

Tetra Pak recycling

Shred Station can facilitate a Tetra Pak recycling service - but please keep any Tetra Paks separate from your cardboard waste. This is because Tetra Paks are not made from 100% cardboard. Most Tetra Pak cartons also contain layers of plastic and aluminium to preserve the contents, meaning they must be recycled separately.

Frequently asked questions

If your query hasn’t been answered on this page, please feel free to head over to our FAQs page for more information or get in touch with our team of experts.

Some cardboard items are unsuitable for recycling. This includes heavily soiled, dirty or greasy cardboard, such as used pizza boxes or unwashed food and drinks containers. To ensure your cardboard can be recycled, please ensure it is clean when placing it in your dry mixed recycling bins or dedicated cardboard collection containers. Other types of cardboard that may not be recyclable include cardboard lined with thin layers of plastic or wax. If you’re unsure, give us a call.

If you’re able to remove the tape, please do! However, removing tape is not essential when using our commercial recycling services. With a dedicated cardboard recycling service, all of your cardboard will be pulped, and any tape or staples are easily removable during this process.

Yes and no. We can collect wet cardboard; however, if it is very wet, it needs to be stored and dried out before recycling. This can create some logistical issues - particularly if sopping wet cardboard, for instance, is mixed in with dry loads. If you have wet cardboard, please let us know, and we’ll talk through the most cost-effective options with you.

For businesses, there are rules and regulations about mixed recycling that vary by country. In Wales, for instance, cardboard must be separated from dry mixed recycling, but under Simpler Recycling regulations in England, it’s okay to be mixed in. For large quantities of cardboard or a dedicated cardboard recycling service, we request that it be kept separately from DMR. Please check your local government’s website to see which laws apply to your business.

We can provide a huge range of containers for cardboard waste, from small wheelie bins to large cages and RORO skips. If you already use a cardboard compactor or baler at your site, we are also happy to collect and recycle baled cardboard.
