Health and social care

Health and social care organisations must shred sensitive information to protect the special category data of patients, residents, service users, and staff.

Medical record shredding

Shred Station helps many customers in the healthcare sector with data destruction, including NHS Trusts, hospitals, GP surgeries, care homes, medical centres, dental practices, emergency services, pharmacies, and more.

We can help you stay fully compliant with your legal obligations by providing secure, efficient, and cost-effective shredding of all your confidential documents and data-handling waste, either at your premises or at one of our state-of-the-art shredding depots.

Destroy or recycle medical waste

We can assist with all sorts of confidential material and non-confidential waste, not just medical record shredding. Our service offering includes, but isn’t limited to:

If you have various materials to dispose of, we’ll even provide dedicated bins and educational resources to reduce contamination and improve your recycling rates.

"Since early 2022, we have been with Shred Station on a national contract covering over 100 sites with varying collection arrangements. The support to exit our previous contract and mobilise was top class, and since entering into the contract with Shred Station, we have been incredibly impressed at having no service issues, especially given the complexity of some of our locations within wider NHS premises. We are proud to partner with a provider who demonstrably helps us achieve carbon reductions, which come about thanks to the passion of the Shred Station team."

Alex Blatherwick,
HCRG Care Group.

"In moving to Shred Station, the Trust has not only made a significant financial saving, but has also made considerable carbon savings towards our green plan. Shred Station provides a monthly report detailing the volumes and weight of the waste collected per site. Due to the quality of the information provided, it will make the completion of the ERIC returns a smooth process come year-end."

Matthew Quinton,
Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust.

"We continue to be very happy with the service and responsive support that we get from our local confidential waste and recycling contractor. The service represents both good value for money and good quality for our trust, and I’m always happy to cite Shred Station’s green credentials when I get the opportunity. It’s always good to know that help is on hand if I need any advice in matters relating to Shred Station’s area of expertise, including, recently, disposal of uniforms made of mixed materials."

Chris Leonard,
East of England Community Health and Care Trust.

"Professional, helpful and understanding, just a few ways to describe the services of Shred Station. At Royal Papworth Hospital, we pride ourselves on being experts in our field and expect our partners to be just that. Having Shred Station as one of those partners reassures our teams that the disposal of confidential waste has been handled in the correct manner. We look forward to the continued partnership with Shred Station."

Martin Fowler,
Royal Papworth Hospital NHS Foundation Trust.

For both public and private sector health and social care organisations, the appropriate maintenance of medical records is crucial. This obligation continues even when the medical records are no longer needed to treat or care for the individual. These records come in many forms and are held in any number of different formats. Regardless of format, however, they must all be securely disposed of. Whether you need healthcare document shredding, the destruction of electronic medical records, or something else entirely, Shred Station is happy to help.

All of our medical shredding services are carried out in accordance with European shredding standard BS EN 15713, and we will supply a Waste Transfer Note and Certificate of Destruction with every service.

You can find us on many public sector frameworks dedicated to medical record disposal and healthcare data destruction, including:

  • NHS National Services Scotland

  • Health Trust Europe

  • NHS North of England Commercial Procurement Collaborative

  • NHS London Procurement Partnership

  • Bluelight Commercial

You can see our full list of frameworks on our public sector page. Medical shredding in line with your green plan

All of our healthcare shredding services are provided carbon-neutral.

In 2019, Shred Station first achieved annual CarbonNeutral® company certification - something we’ve maintained each year since. In 2024, we completed and offset all of our historic internal emissions in line with The CarbonNeutral Protocol, meaning we are now a lifetime carbon-neutral company. We’ve achieved this by reducing emissions in line with our Carbon Reduction Plan.

We're committed to the achievement of true Net Zero, and we understand the importance of Net Zero targets to the NHS. We recycle 100% of shredded paper at UK mills, and utilise dedicated waste streams for non-paper materials to ensure as much as possible is recycled responsibly. For anything we can’t recycle, we operate with a Zero to Landfill policy.

Shredding medical documents securely

Our security-vetted staff can attend at your premises to collect your medical records for off-site shredding at one of our depots, or carry out an on-site shred where a member of your team can witness the service. All services are performed in line with BS EN 15713 security standards.

All our employees undergo thorough training in areas such as security and data protection, both as part of the onboarding process and regularly throughout the duration of their employment. Every member of our team goes through rigorous vetting and security checks in line with BS 7858 standards, as well as having a DBS check every three years. When our operatives arrive at your premises, they will be in full uniform and will be able to produce Shred Station-branded photo ID.

Our high-security shredding facilities are equipped with 24-hour CCTV, alarm systems and robust perimeter security, while our purpose-built shredding trucks all have rigid sealed bodies and are continually tracked via GPS. Each vehicle is also equipped with bespoke four-camera CCTV systems for total security during transit.
