Shred Station reduces fleet emissions with a fully electric articulated lorry

In September 2024, Shred Station added its first fully electric articulated lorry to its fleet of 100+ vehicles.

In line with our Carbon Reduction Plan and our commitment to reducing our emissions in line with science-based targets, we have been searching for the perfect electric truck for quite some time. We have now made that leap.

The articulated lorry we have chosen as our first electric truck is a Volvo FM Electric. After trialling several other models of electric trucks, we are pleased to have found a model that meets our needs regarding range and capabilities. This is an exciting step for Shred Station. We hope this to be the first of many electric vehicles in our fleet.

About the Volvo FM Electric

With a double-deck trailer attached, the Volvo FM Electric can carry up to 50 pallets or a gross combination weight of 44 tonnes, with a range of around 185 miles. This makes the model perfect for bulk collection jobs. We provide a lot of bulk collection services within a shorter range of our depots. Because of this, the range required is relatively low, and the space needed is high, making this vehicle the ideal choice.

As well as reducing our emissions, the Volvo FM Electric comes with a variety of safety benefits when compared with a standard model artic cab. Firstly, there is a lower entry position, meaning better visibility of the road with a reduction in blind spots. There is also a built-in camera monitoring system that improves direct vision, enhances night vision, and further reduces blind spots for the driver.

Other steps we have taken to electrify our fleet

This isn’t the first step we have taken to electrify our fleet. We have also:

Replaced 7 of our diesel forklifts with electric models, saving approximately 72,800 litres of diesel per year.
Started transitioning our company cars to hybrid or fully electric models. Our Norwich depot also uses solar power, making charging as green as can be.
Installed EV chargers at our depots to support our staff and visitors in their EV journeys.
Trialled numerous other electric trucks, including the Volvo EFE, the DAF LF and the Volta Zero. The Volvo FM Electric is the first that meets our needs around capability and range.
